Mike will continue to be a strong ally in the fight for marriage equality and protection against discrimination until it is the law in all 50 states. Mike co-sponsored and voted for the Equality Act which passed the House last year and is an advocate for the equal treatment of LGBTQ+ couples who hope to adopt a foster child.

Mike believes that no one should face discrimination or harassment based on their gender identity or sexual orientation, and that no child should face hostility in school because of their sexuality.

Mike also believes that our country has a role to play in helping protect the rights of LGBTQ+ people around the world and has been a vocal proponent in Congress for LGBTQ+ rights.

During his first term, Mike has:

  • Co-sponsored H.R. 5, the Equality Act, to end discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in a variety of areas, including housing, public accommodations and facilities, education, federal funding, recreational facilities, etc..
  • Supported and co-sponsored a House resolution to oppose the President’s ban on transgender individuals serving in the Armed Forces. Any qualified person with the courage and dedication to serve our country should not be discriminated against due to their gender or gender identity.
  • Co-sponsored the Every Child Deserves a Family Act, to prohibit discrimination on the basis of religion, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), and marital status in the administration and provision of child welfare services; to improve safety, well-being, and permanency for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning foster youth.
