As the longest government shutdown in American history brutally continues, the devastation only grows.

I can’t count the number of headlines I read every day — families plunging into credit card debt, selling cars to pay rent, forgoing life-saving medicine to put food on the table, Native American communities struggling just to get by, food bank lines stretching around the block, the list goes on and on.

All the while, President Trump is threatening to drag on the shutdown for “months or years” and declare a national emergency unless Congress gives in to his latest temper tantrum.

Democrats have come to the table time and time again, offering viable solutions without sacrificing our humanity for an immoral border wall. The House has voted twice to reopen the government.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell won’t allow a vote in the Senate. And Trump storms out of meetings without any real display of leadership. He doesn’t listen to the majority of Americans who need the government to reopen.

Here’s the hard truth: Trump’s childish behavior has very real consequences. He’s threatening the livelihoods of everyday American families, using them as bargaining chips in his latest game.

If you are affected by the shutdown, I am so sorry. I promise you, we’re fighting hard to get you back to work. If you are not affected by the shutdown, I ask: how long do you think you could last without a paycheck?

We’re going to keep working as hard as we can to end this shutdown. But in the meantime, here are a few organizations doing work locally and nationally to provide relief to those negatively impacted.

Consider making a donation to help the cause, or visit their websites if you’re in need of support:

Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County
Providing food resource assistance to struggling families

San Diego Humane Society
Providing pet food assistance to impacted federal workers with pets

World Central Kitchen
Chef Jose Andres’ organization providing free meals to federal workers in Washington D.C. through their #ChefsForFeds operation

Hunger Free America
Advocating for an end to the shutdown while providing food resource assistance to impacted workers through their ‘Fed Food’ Hotline

Thanks for helping to make a difference in this difficult time for our country,

Although I know you already understand this but the Government partial shutdown is a total disgrace

Mike, you and your fellow members of Congress (including the current President), are a total disgrace.

You were elected to work on behalf, and take care of the American People, you are failing us.

Stop making excuses, and do your job; open the Government!!!

People are suffering…..

Mike, I am a registered voter within the 49th District (American Independent), and it’s very disheartening that you, and your fellow members of Congress cannot come to some type of compromise/agreement, and open the Government so that at least Govt. Employees can be paid.

At this point it is reaching a dire situation it’s not so much about the wall, build the wall, or don’t build the wall. How about just open the Govt. so hard working Americans can feed themselves, and their families.

Now Mike, the current situation is a difficult concept for you to understand, many of us in the 49th District did not grow up within a life of privilege, and affluent lifestyle that you are so much accustomed to. The majority of us (49th District) are hard working Americans scrimping, and saving just to make ends meet, even more so now with the Govt. shutdown Americans are hurting.

Mike when you burst upon the political scene, I thought “Great, a fresh new start, maybe the 49th District will move in a positive direction.” But when I saw footage of you in Puerto Rico partying it up, having a great time with your lobbyist buddies, all on tax payer dollars, whilst hard working Govt. Workers within the 49th District are going without a paycheck, struggling, worrying, and stressed out about how to put food on the table, you were having a great ol’ time with a big smile on your face, and living it up! But what the heck, after all you’re getting a Govt. Paycheck.

Now Mike, granted I wasn’t a big fan of your predecessor Mr. Issa, at least he did his job, and looked after the welfare of the American People within the 49th District.

Mike, you’re off to a horrible start. I realize you are young, and inexperienced within the political realm. Here’s a tip: next time instead of going on a little junket, and partying it up, take care of your constituents first (especially the Govt. workers who are hurting), remember this, we put you in office, and we can easily remove you.

Mike, when your re-election comes up, as I’m filling out my voting ballot, I’m going to remember this little episode……you need to really think about that!

Hi Mike,

I read the paragraphs above talking negatively about the president. So could someone describe what is being done to reopen the government besides pointing fingers?
