SAN DIEGO, CA –Today, Rear Admiral Len Hering (U.S. Navy, retired), a prominent military and civilian sustainability leader and Executive Director of the Center for Sustainable Energy, announced his endorsement of environmental attorney Mike Levin for the 49th District Congressional seat currently held by Republican Darrell Issa.
“We can’t keep denying the facts about climate, energy and our future. Mike Levin shares my passion to educate people on the dangers we will face if we do not take responsible actions to secure the nation’s energy independence and to preserve water, air quality and other resources,” said Admiral Hering.
“Having Admiral Hering’s endorsement is a great honor,” said Levin. “I have gotten to know him well through my service on the board of San Diego’s Center for Sustainable Energy and we agree that addressing climate change and sustainable energy issues are an imperative. Either we will lead and innovate on the clean energy technologies of the future, or we will use technologies developed elsewhere and lose an immense opportunity for economic growth.”
While in the Navy, Hering focused on many environmental issues from renewable energy to responsible water use and conservation. He built a team recognized throughout the Department of Defense as the best in environmental protection and sustainable innovation. Hering is an Advisory Board member to the Center for Climate and Security. A Meteorologist and Oceanography by degree he has received numerous awards including a Presidential Award for Leadership in Federal Energy Management.
Levin was raised in South Orange County, where he attended public schools. He graduated from Stanford University, where he served as student body president, and Duke University School of Law. He was the Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Orange County and has worked since as an environmental attorney and clean energy advocate. For the last two decades, he has been involved in a variety of local, state and federal progressive political campaigns.
